The inside region of the Viking 2 - Footpad No. 3 is partially covered with soil. On enlarged pictures we have studied the grain size distribution of the clear visible particles. The calibration work was done on the Science Test Lander. The results in conclusion: This Martian soil sample is characterized by relatively large grain sizes. About 60% by weight of the material fits closely the crushed rocks size-frequency distribution. There is a depletion of fragments smaller than 2.0 mm size. It appears possible to regenerate the original distribution function.
