Investigations of the correlations between surface tectonics, long-wavelength features of the geoid and long-wavelength heterogeneities deduced from seismology are seen as promising. A quantitative appraisal is made of the correlations between a specified tectonic model and the geoid and variable harmonic expansion, with particular attention given to the degree-2 geoid. The analysis of the geoid-tectonics correlations is restricted to Okal's (1977) model. Correlations between Okal's tectonic model and geoid spherical harmonics expansion show a cut-off between degree-2 and the remaining degrees, l = 3 to 12. The geoid, including degrees 3-12, is found to correlate with ocean ages according to the well-known pattern of a cooling plate in isostatic equilibrium, with geoid highs related to young oceans. The degree-2 geoid also reveals a significant correlation with ocean ages, but with an opposite trend, that is, geoid lows related to young oceans.
