In-situ detectors aboard Giotto recorded the discrete impact of particulates from 287,000 km pre-encounter to 202,000 km postencounter. Mass sensitive detectors determined the intercepted particulate flux at 68 km/sec enabling the mass distribution upwards of 10 to the minus 19th power g to be determined. Flux data are combined to assess the dust distribution over this mass range and its spatial variation. Properties relating to the geometrical area and mass of the distributions along Giotto's 605 km intercept trajectory are derived and are transformed to the nucleus surface to assess overall mass output rates and activity variations. A bimodal particle distribution (in terms of an abrupt index change) is demonstrated to exist within the coma. Data yield full agreement with the mass required to decelerate the spacecraft but imply a relatively large population of massive particles surrounding Halley which would not be detected by optical sensing.
