Giotto spacecraft charging and electrostatic fields caused by impact-generated plasma emitted from the Giotto bumper shield at 600 to 1000 km from Halley's comet are estimated. Results indicate that Giotto will not charge significantly above +25 V. The wake surface charges to a high negative potential of -450 V. The wake-surface charge does not influence the emitted ions and is not discharged by them. Near the side surface there is a disturbed population of ambient ions (no impact-generated ions reach the side surface). Near the forward half of the side surface, the electron population is dominated by the impact-generated electrons. Near the rearward half there are no electrons because of the highly-negative wake surface. A tilt of the solar array surfaces toward the wake direction could result in their charging to high negative potentials.
