The bright hot rapidly rotating B3V star ETA-UMa (V=1.86) gives a pristinelow column density sample of the warm (7,000 K) interstellar cloudsurrounding the solar system. We will use the GHRS in a very highsignal-to-noise mode to search for the interstellar CII* fine-structurelines in this direction, and to measure absorption features due toC, N, O, Si, Zn, Fe, and Mg. From these data total column densities,as well as the the electron density, abundance patterns, temperature, kinematics, spatial distribution of neutral versus ionized gas, turbulence, radiation field, and ionization equilibrium state can be inferred. The star eta UMa has been reported to have shown epochs of emission lineactivity (traced as the filling in of Halpha absorption features), sowe request that Visits 1 and 2 be scheduled 6 months apart so thatthe SiII 1260 Angstroms absorption line can be checked for profile-shapevariations. We also request that our proprietary data period be extendedto 9 months to allow both sets of data to be included in the publicationwhich results from the proprietary data.
