Beginning in 2006, NASA established a group of virtual observatories (VO) that were charged with the task of developing data systems that documented, managed, and were able to provide data that were physically distributed throughout the Heliophysics Data Environment (HPDE). Since their inception, the VOs have been working to document high priority data sets using SPASE (Space Physics Archive Search and Extract) metadata, and building systems that use these metadata to locate, package, and deliver data to users. The data sets from the large data repositories (NSSDC, WDC, NGDC) etc. and the local holdings of the VOs have provided low hanging fruit that has been relatively easy to gather to date. In addition, NASA is now requiring that new heliophysics missions document their data using SPASE metadata which is accessible to the VOs. However, the concept of the VOs is that they can provide access to any HPDE data that are available online, including data provided by individual scientists or groups of scientists at a university or similar organization. Including data from individuals, independent projects and other data providers is reliant on good will. This talk describes how individual data providers can make their data accessible through the VO portals, how VOs can assist data providers, and the value of contributing to the data environment.
