On the 1 : 100 000 series of airborne magnetic maps prepared for the Tanzanian Government, a high-amplitude and pronounced total magnetic field intensity anomaly forms an oval pattern around Zanzui Hill in the north of Tanzania. The anomaly is produced by an ultramafic intrusive complex with some extremely high remanent magnetism; the causative body shows the features of a ring structure. A ground follow-up programme using different geophysical methods and petrophysical studies on specimens from outcrops and boreholes was carried out. The rock magnetic studies indicated that remanent magnetic polarization played the greater role in the production of the observed magnetic anomalies. The principal source of the high remanent magnetic polarization is a mineral with blocking temperature below 300°C, maghemite, partly titanomagnetite; haematite or martite contribute little to the total magnetization. The ring structure at Zanzui is located in the so-called Vail's lineament 3800 km long passing from Trompsburg in South Africa, via Bushveld to East Africa. The ring structures of the Zanzui type may contribute considerably to magnetic anomalies of the lithosphere.
