The geometrical aspects of the reconnection of magnetic field lines are addressed. Reconnection is associated with discontinuities in the overall field line organization of the configuration in which it occurs. Special magnetic structures resulting from the existence of such discontinuities are discussed. Attention is focused on isolated points where the magnetic field strength strictly vanishes. Such magnetic nulls are more likely to be encountered in the uncontrolled extraterrestrial environment than closed field lines. Thus, magnetic nulls are probably a crucial element of most reconnection events in the magnetosphere.
