The theory of a simple model of forced oscillations of the magnetosphere is outlined and used to evaluate the temporal variation of the phase pattern over a meridional network of geomagnetic observatories. For a geomagnetic pulsation driven by a source at the magnetopause, the model initially predicts an approximately in-phase pattern of the forced oscillation. This pattern approaches (under steady state conditions) phase differences of pi across regions which are in resonance with the driving frequency of the source. Geomagnetic pulsation measurements spanning the range from 50.6 to 66.6 deg in geomagnetic latitude are compared with the predictions of the model and GEOS-1 plasma density measurements.
