A collection of 220 samples from Early Jurassic Newark Supergroup volcanic units (Watchung, Talcott, Holyoke, Hampden and Deerfield basalts) and intrusive units (Manitook and Palisades sills), was studied with the aim of testing the previously suggested occurrence of a low average dipole moment of the Earth's magnetic field some 200 Ma ago. After viscosity tests, alternating field demagnetization of all samples, and thermal variation studies of saturation magnetization of 74 selected samples, we find that only 8% of the entire collection was a priori suitable for paleointensity experiments. Using the original Thellier and Thellier method, we have obtained 17 reliable paleointensity values of average quality from the Palisades Sill and the Holyoke Basalt. Although these two units recorded substantially different field directions, they provide similar estimates of the Virtual Dipole Moment: 9.4 +/- 1.2 and 11.3 +/- 2.2 (× 1022 A m2), respectively. These values are within the range of secular variation of the recent geomagnetic field.
