The excitation of MHD fields during the injection of an artifical plasma cloud into the ionosphere is examined. Analytical expressions are derived for the spatial distribution of the disturbance in the ionosphere. It is shown that, as a rule, the Alfven-wave generation region is larger than the plasma cloud. Amplitudes of the electromagnetic field are assessed with reference to the Spolokh experiment.
