Gamma-ray generation in compact sources is studied theoretically by means of an electron-photon cascade in an monoenergetic photon field. The types of interaction considered are inverse Compton electron scattering and the gamma-quanta photoproduction of electron-positron pairs. A relation is developed numerically between the parameters of the photon field and primary radiation and the spectra of the cascade particles. Cascades in a photon field of the power-law spectrum can be described theoretically, and application of the concept is discussed in terms of gamma rays from compact sources. An expression is derived which delineates the slope of the standard gamma-quantum spectrum universally and also describes electron-photon cascades in matter and in a monoenergetic photon field of energy. The results agree quantitatively with those of previous Monte-Carlo simulations by other authors.
