We have extended the Stromgren sphere model for an H II region resulting from a hot star in a uniform medium. The new model has a spherical, evacuated cavity in the uniform medium, and the star inside the cavity. The resulting theoretical brightness distributions compare favorably to images of actual H II regions in our Galaxy and other galaxies. We compare the modified Stromgren sphere model to the Orion nebula, the Rosette nebula, and others. The new model approximates the Stromgren sphere in one limit of its parameters and the blister model in another limit.
