The oblique propagation of low frequency electromagnetic waves across the geomagnetic field lines and their transformation into plasma wave have been studied. The electromagnetic wave in a weakly inhomogeneous, cold as well as warm magnetoplasma transforms the wave into plasma wave (electrostatic wave) near the lower hybrid resonance (LHR) frequency. The conditions for this transformation have been studied. The growth rate and the absorption of the transformed plasma wave generated near the LHK frequency have been derived and computed for various ionospheric plasma and field parameters. Thus, the observed LHR noise from the satellite could be interpreted in terms of the generated electrostatic waves around LHR frequency at ionospheric heights.
