Uranus: Magnetic Fields, Neptune: Magnetic Fields
Scientific paper
The authors show that the magnetic field observed on Uranus is the vector sum of fields generated by a turbulent dynamo in the core of the planet and in a thin conducting shell surrounding the core (the lower layer of the ocean). The large inclination of the dipole moment relative to the rotation axis is associated with the fact that the field which is excited in the core is preferentially axisymmetric, while in the shell the field is nonaxisymmetric. For Neptune, it is anticipated that the configuration will have a smaller inclination between the dipole and the rotation axis.
