According to theoretical predictions, the waveguide propagation of internal gravity waves (IGWs) in the atmosphere should be observed with horizontal phase velocities of 310, 260, and 180 m/s. In the present paper, simple models of the atmosphere and the IGW source are used in an attempt to explain why IGWs with a velocity of 310 m/s have not been observed experimentally. An attempt is also made to elucidate the nature of IGWs generated by a tropospheric source, with allowance for the waveguide properties of the atmosphere.
