It is suggested that the generation of dc electric currents in the solar atmosphere, needed as an energy source for flares, may be ultimately caused by the rotation of the Sun. Then, in the atmosphere, the electric current helicity, which is a pseudo-scalar quantity, should be antisymmetric with respect to the equatorial plane. An analysis of relevant observations leads to the (tentative) result that the current helicity is predominantly negative in the Northern and positive in the Southern Hemisphere, just opposite in sign to the helicity of the currents generated according to standard dynamo theory by the turbulent alpha effect in the convection zone. Current generation due to the differential rotation of the photospheric foot points of magnetic field lines, however, can explain the rule found. The explosive release of magnetic energy during flares is believed to involve magnetic reconnection. For the situation of the solar atmosphere, this reconnection concept leads to the conjecture that the surfaces consisting of magnetic field lines which touch the photosphere are preferential sites of reconnection.
