The method of construction of polynomial surfaces has been used for a study of H-alpha synoptic charts of the Sun. It is shown that the majority of such charts are sufficiently well represented with the first order surfaces. It has been discovered that in the epochs of the beginning and maximum of an 11-year solar cycle the optimum representation is rendered with the surfaces of higher order.
