Plasma observations in the magnetosheath and at the magnetopause often exhibit a gas dynamic-type of transition with Chapman-Ferraro currents distributed over the magnetosheath, the magnetopause being characterized by a continuous magnetic field variation and a discontinuous density profile. We present a first theoretical model to explain such gas dynamic-type transitions and compare our model results with observations of the THEMIS mission.
