Measurements made with the Sigma 3 gas chromatography setup led to the identification of CO2, H2O, and SO2 in the Venus cloud layer. The concentration of H2SO4 aerosol was found to be much less than 1 mg/cu m at heights of 61.5 to 54 km over the Vega 1 landing site. At heights of 61.5 to 48 km, the mean concentration of H2SO4 aerosol was 1.0 plus or minus 0.2 mg/cu over the Vega 2 landing site. In the absence of sulfur, the lower limit for the H2SO4 concentration is 0.4 plus or minus 0.1 mg/cu m.
