Prior to the acquisition of data during the Galileo encounters with Ganymede, major questions about geologic processes and the evolution of Ganymede were identified and these formed a basis for the targeting and data acquisition strategy for the imaging team. Here we report on several of these major questions and the initial results revealed by the first two encounters.
