Our recent study (Lindfors et al. 2006) shows that there is clear connection between synchrotron outbursts and gamma-ray state in 3C 279, high gamma-ray states occurring when synchrotron outbursts are in an early stage. However, the outburst is already beyond the broad line region (BLR) during the gamma-ray flaring, which makes the External Compton mechanisms, where external photons originate from BLR, inefficient to reproduce the observed gamma-ray emission. On the other hand, one-zone or simple multi-component SSC models (Lindfors et al. 2005) are not able to reproduce the observed gamma-ray behaviour either. We discuss shortly other suggested mechanisms for gamma-ray emission as well as future prospects to solve the question of gamma-ray emission mechanism of 3C 279 via multiwavelength campaigns during the GLAST era.
