Gamma-ray bursts can be seen to high redshifts. Therefore they can be useful tools to explore the early universe just after reionization and initial stages of star formation. There have been some indications that in addition these objects can be used as ‘standard candles' to determine the global cosmological parameters. We will examine the later aspect critically and describe whether this is likely to be helpful in the near future. Then we will describe how the evolution of these sources can be determined from current observations and how this is related to the evolution of other cosmological sources.
