A small piggyback detector system is used to study the reduction of the gamma-ray background induced by atmospheric neutrons in a type of active shielded gamma-ray spectroscope. The system consists of two phi 1.5 arcsec x 1.5 arcsec NaI crystal units, one of which is surrounded by some neutron shield material. The results of a balloon flight in 1981 are presented. The data show that a shield of 3 cm thick pure paraffin can not reduce the gamma-ray background; on the contrary, it may even cause some enhancement.
