A brief survey is made of the rôle of Gamma Ray Astronomy in
elucidating the origin of cosmic rays. Topics considered include gamma
rays from the Magellanic Clouds, the radial gradient of cosmic rays in
the Galaxy, evidence for SNR acceleration and the presence of a Giant
Galactic Halo.
