The Galileoscope student telescope kit is examined from the perspective of Galileo- his approach, science, and sense of innovation. This new telescope kit was developed by a team of experts in optics, telescope use, and astronomy education for the International Year of Astronomy 2009. It is designed to be durable, easily assembled, and to provide a high-quality view of the Moon and planets, as well as other objects viewed by Galileo such as the Pleiades. The educational program is also described. It encourages inquiry, cooperative learning, testing of ideas and predictions, and hands-on work. The Galileoscope teaching activities are being disseminated widely and will used in the International Year of Astronomy 2009 and beyond. The Galileoscope can be configured in both the Galilean and Keplerian configurations. The image quality, field of view, stray light rejection, and magnification of the different configurations will be described and compared to those of Galileo's telescope. The Galileoscope is designed for urban observations and its design features for city use will be described. The Galileoscope mount will also be compared to the mounts used at the time of Galileo.
The International Year of Astronomy is supported by the National Science Foundation through a grant to the American Astronomical Society. The National Optical Astronomy Observatory is operated by the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy (AURA), Inc. under cooperative agreement with the National Science Foundation.
