This review discusses the interplay among galaxy formation, large-scale star formation and the origin of the Hubble sequence of galaxies. After establishing the cosmological context for galaxy formation and the role of dark matter, the properties of intergalactic gas and of high-redshift galaxies are reviewed. The systematic differences along the Hubble sequence observed in zero-redshift galaxies are discussed together with the possible underlying physics that determines the presence of otherwise of a disk. Feedback processes which connect the merging history, star formation history and environment of a galaxy and which may distinguish galaxies in clusters and in the field are briefly reviewed.
