Spectrographic and photometric data are used to resolve several complexes of very young stars and interstellar matter in the Carina spiral arm. There is a positive difference between the radial velocities of the stars and the gas (ionized calcium and hydrogen), the difference is maximum along the inner edge of the spiral arm. It is suggested that this radial velocity difference indicates the recent passage of a shock wave responsible for star formation.
