The gradual cosmic rise with time of abundances of elements heavier than hydrogen and helium is mediated by the stellar evolution taking place within a host galaxy. Nucleosynthesis of these elements is carried out by stars at rates which are determined by their masses, and the elements are expelled into the interstellar medium of a galaxy at the end of a star's life. This newly-enriched matter is in turn incorporated into the next stellar generation. As matter cycles through stars, hydrogen is turned into heavy elements and over time the level of the latter rises. I will outline the general components of this process, discuss nuclear production rates in terms of stellar mass, and then focus on the evolution of nitrogen as a specific example of a current problem in chemical evolution.
