Monomineralic and lithic fragments from the Luna 24 drill core are samples of a mare ferrogabbro and a rarer gabbro of possible highlands origin. Mineral-phase chemistries of the mare ferrogabbro suggest the crystallization near the lunar surface of an evolved Fe-rich (Fe/Fe+Mg = 0.68 to 0.70) multiply saturated liquid. This low-Ti liquid, also represented in the core by basalt and brown-glass fragments, crystallized at the Mare Crisium site as a lava flow or intrusive and underwent little differentiation at the cooling site.
