Scientific paper

A model of Galactic chemical evolution is presented where the evolution of several single elements (12C, 16O, 14N, 20Ne, 24Mg, 28Si, 56Fe) is followed in detail. The contribution to chemical enrichment from type I SNe, originating from C-O white dwarfs in close binary systems, as well as the contribution from massive stars exploding as type II SNe is taken into account. This allows the study of the different roles of type I and II SNe in Galactic chemical enrichment and the calculation of SN rates as a function of time.
