During the MAXUS 4 flight in 2001 two floating-zone silicon crystals have been grown in parallel. The experiments used different means to influence thermocapillary convection in the melt zones and thus reduce fluctuations of the dopant concentration in the crystal: One experiment used vibrations of the growing crystal, the other a rotating magnetic field. The rotating magnetic field experiment was also equipped with a system to directly measure the temperature fluctuations in the melt. The vibration experiment showed a reduction of the dopant striation intensity as well as a reduction of the interface curvature. In the rotating magnetic field crystal, dopant striations were practically eliminated.
