The paper describes several applications of potential refractive index, K, in radio-meteorological analysis. Limitations of an earlier technique for locating layer-type discontinuities are noted, and alternatives discussedE A time-section, displaying day-to-day variations in the height at which various values of K occur above the mid-point of a v.h.f. path, shows the effect of large-scale changes in refractive index structure on received signal strength, particularly during periods of anticyclonic subsidence and the passage of certain cold fronts.
