Astrometry, which is the oldest branch of astronomy, studies the geometric and kinetic characteristics of heavenly bodies by precise measurements, is discussed. A knowledge of the precise locations, distances to, shapes and sizes of heavenly bodies, and their motions, is necessary for all types of astronomy and for many applied problems in geodesy, geophysics and space research. Fundamental astrometry supports all this work with a unified system of celestrial coordinates.
