In the first part of this lecture a review is given on the major stages of celestial mechanics from the 17th century to the beginning of the 20th century. The second part will deal with four examples showing how the methods and results of celestial mechanics were partly applied directly, partly adjusted to problems of space flight mechanics. These examples concern optimum transfer trajectories, Laplace's activity sphere, disturbed Kepler orbits, and regularization and linearization of the equations of motion.
