Spectroscopy has proved a powerful tool for stellar modelling, but its success is dependent on understanding that many and various atomic processes involved. Michael Seaton's work in establishing the Opacity Project led to vastly improved models of processes important in astrophysics. The current phase of the project is now tackling uncertainties in the atomic data and opacities, comparing the different theoretical approaches now taken to these calculations.
