A statistical analysis of a sequence of 1337 laminae of cyclically varying thickness, which are interpreted as periglacial varves from the late Precambrian Elatina Formation in South Australia, is presented. The data infer an ancient activity cycle, represented by a sequence of 110 varve-cycles, with a variable period approximating a normal distribution and with mean and median values of 12 varve years. The intrinsic period of the varve-cycle is shown to be modulated by a longer period of about 160 varve years, with stochastic variation being superimposed on the varve-cycle period. The line spacing within the multiplets found in the power spectral density of the varve thickness sequence supports a separation period of about 160 years.
