By means of flame spectrometry, K and Rb were measured in minerals and rocks belonging to several ignimbrite suite in Toscane, (Italy). Model calculations are presented to explain the observations quantitatively. It is shown that an anatectic origin of the granitic-gneiss crust could very well be responsible for the observed trace element distribution. Petrographic and isotopic evidence is also in good agreement with such an explanation. The model calculations also show that with time an eastward and concomitantly downward migration has occurred of the center of the magmatic activity.
