The geochemical and geophysical processes that take place in meteorite matter during or after the meteorite impact are discussed together with the theoretical considerations that must be used in the process of deducing the nature of the original meteorite matter from data on partly fractionated or dispersed impactite matter. Four different mechanisms of fractionation are identified, including ablation during the meteorite's passage through the atmosphere, selective impact melting and vaporization, fractionation in the process of degassing of the impact melt, and inhomogeneous partition of the meteorite components within the impact melt. Available data on several meteorites are used to illustrate the relative significance of these fractionation mechanisms for deducing the character of the original meteorite matter.
