Observations of CN now extend from the microwave to the vacuum ultraviolet spectral regions and a number of electronic transitions have been classified. Of these, the A2{Pi}-X2{Sigma}+ (red system) and B2{Sigma}+-X2{Sigma}+ (violet system) transitions have been extensively studied because of their astrophysical importance.
