It is assumed that a region with a high rate of ion production exists in the auroral ionosphere. A horizontal neutral wind changes its direction several times with height. It is shown that, in this case, 'tongues' of ionization can extend from this region of elevated ion production, leading to the formation of several maxima on the vertical profile of plasma concentration. This process can explain the formation of two-layer Es in the auroral ionosphere.
