It is suggested that the layering of the flux of electrons precipitating into the atmosphere into small-scale forms (rays, sheets, etc.) might be the result of the development of a filamentation (aperiodic) instability. In both its nature and its external form the auroral ray structure is analogous to the filamentation pattern of relativistic electron beams observed in laboratory experiments. The instability has a dissipative nature and requires collisions of the precipitating electrons with the ambient medium.
