The formation of hydrodynamical discontinuities during gravitational-wave propagation is studied. It is shown that a tangential discontinuity is to be expected when two waves are interacting. The computed wind velocities are in agreement with those observed in the lower thermosphere. This process could explain the occurrence of violent wind shears and turbulent layers within this stable region of the atmosphere.
