Initial results on the formation of a compact toroidal plasma configuration termed the spheromak are reported. Z- and theta-pinch techniques were used to produce a prolate spheroid deuterium plasma configuration with both toroidal and poloidal magnetic field components, with the toroidal field maintained by currents circulating in the plasma on closed flux surfaces. Measurements of the structure of the magnetic surfaces and the toroidal field obtained by a two-coil probe are used to produce contour plots of the poloidal magnetic flux and calculate the poloidal current, from which the development of the plasma and magnetic configurations is traced and the presence of a circulating current on the flux surfaces is deduced. An ion temperature of 190 eV is estimated from spectral line widths, and further measurements yield an electron density of 3 x 10 to the 15th/cu cm, an electron temperature of 30 eV, a beta of 0.4 and a lifetime of 30 microsec. Future plans include the prolongation of the z-component of the magnetic field and the investigation of magnetohydrodynamic and diffusion lifetimes.
