An overview is given of the principal attributes of efficient numerical models suitable for intermediate-range (1-3 day) forecasting. Design aspects discussed include: limited-area strategies and tradeoffs between the spatial coverage and time validity of the forecast; efficient time-integration schemes; spatial discretization; the parameterization of physical processes and their sensitivity to both temporal and spatial resolution; adiabatic and diabatic initialization; and the interplay between evolving computer architectures and the choice of algorithm. These aspects are related to both present-day and possible future intermediate-range forecast models.
