Using the Fresnel diffraction integral an exact expression is derived for the on axis intensity distribution of focussed annular beam. It is found that the ratio of the shift "Δf", of the maximum intensity to the distance "f" between the geometrical focus and the plane of the aperture depends not only on the Fresnel number Fl of the focussing lens but also on the central obstruction. The effect becomes significant for large obstruction ratios.
