The formation of a magnetic cavity around the cometary nucleus is studied in a nonstationary quasi one-dimensional MHD treatment. Characteristic features of the spatial profiles of plasma density, velocity and magnetic field observed by the GIOTTO spacecraft in the ionospheric region of comet Halley are reproduced. The contact discontinuity may be separated from the magnetic cavity boundary as a consequence of ion-neutral drag.
