An overview of flows in the high latitude ionosphere observed at 15 s resolution is presented, using data from the UK Polar EISCAT experiment, which covered five different regions of ionospheric flow: the early morning auroral zone flow cell, the dayside region of low flows between and equatorward of the flow cells, the afternoon and evening auroral zone flow cell, the boundary region between the auroral zone and the polar cap, and the polar cap region. Observations for these regions are provided, indicating the magnitude and character of the flows in these regions and the properties of the observed line-of-sight flows. Comparison of these flow data with simultaneous plasma and magnetic field measurements in the solar wind emphasizes the strong control exerted on high latitude flows by the north-south component of the IMF.
