On July 27, 1981, from about 17:24 to about 17:56 UT, a class 1B flare occurred in Hale region 17760, position S12, E11. The corresponding microwave burst was observed with the VLA at 2 cm wavelength, while at the Owens Valley Radio Observatory simultaneous microwave spectra (1-18 GHz) of the burst were recorded. The images and spectra are analyzed, and it is shown that the flare occurred as a series of reconnection events in the current layer between the magnetic field of the active region and the differently oriented field of an emerging flux region. Stages in the development of the flare are shown to be related to separate reconnection events occurring at different locations in the current layer. For one of these reconnection events the spectra reveal a second microwave source that was not observed by the VLA because of its large size. The two microwave sources are characterized by different magnetic field strengths: 150-200 gauss for the extended source, 300-400 gauss for the other.
