The Center for Integrated Space Weather Modeling (CISM) holds a two-week summer school each year for graduate students and space weather professionals to gain a system level understanding of the space environment and the effects of space weather. A typical day in the summer school consists of three morning lectures followed by an afternoon lab session. After the morning lectures, the participants are each asked to submit a question about the mornings topics on a question card. The lecturers then take the time to answer these questions prior to afternoon sessions. In the last 5 years over 1000 such question cards have been collected and cataloged. Despite detailed lectures by experts similar questions appear every year. For example, after an introductory lecture on solar physics, students across several years asked fundamental questions like: how is the “surface” of the sun defined; and, what theory describes the 11-year solar cycle. Along with detailed feedback and questions about particular lecture topics, the cards provide valuable insight into student learning at the graduate level. Students’ questions show that even after detailed instruction, students can still miss key points of a lecture, and lecturers’ assumptions about student knowledge may be incorrect.
